What I do
When assessing
children my overall aim is to gain a thorough understanding of the child. In order to do this I may:
* carry out interviews with those closely connected with the child, in a variety of venues
* observe the child in a variety of situations
* thoroughly study relevant documentation
* gain an understanding of the
perspective of the child, directly if possible
* carry out a standardised assessment to indicate the level of cognitive functioning, or intelligence quotient (IQ).
* give numeracy and literacy assessments
* compare the numeracy and literacy results to the general IQ in case dyslexia is indicated
* carry out any other relevant assessments eg. self-esteem, reading comprehension, speed of reading, speed of writing, and so on
* interpret my results and compile them into a professional report
giving a profile of the child using information gained from the
assessment process and current research
* in this report make recommendations for changes to be made to provide
greater support for the child using my knowledge of child development
The report may be used to inform a variety of other agencies such as
the school, the LEA or Special Educational Needs and Disability
Tribunal
My assessment of adults is just as thorough, using as many of these sources of information as is appropriate
